Tony Pickering

Tony Pickering was born August 8, 1941 in Payson, Utah and now resides in Springville, Utah, with his wife Andrea. Tony's interests in high school were drafting and architectural design.  After graduation from high school, he attended BYU and Utah State University, where he studied advertising design and illustration.  Tony discovered a love and appreciation for detail and design, and began to create pencil drawings.  Pencil became a real passion of his and he has created many fine art graphite originals.  They have sold very well and he has made several into limited edition prints.

Tony Pickering's uncle was a great inspiration in his life.  He was a master of many mediums and he shared his vast knowledge of them with Tony.  Tony's uncle also expanded his enthusiasm for art into bronze and stone sculpting.  Tony's desire to gain even more knowledge of bronze sculpting led him to organize the first bronze sculpting class at the Springville Art Museum.  The class was taught by renowned sculptors Stan Johnson and Jim Avati.  Bronze sculpting has been an important part of Tony Pickering's creativity for many years.  He has created many different pieces and has had them all made into limited editions.  His bronzes have been sold locally, regionally and nationally on both coasts.

Tony's work and interest in sculpting led him to stone sculpting.  The first piece Tony created in stone was a contemporary, modern quail in alabaster and sandstone.  The quail have been widely accepted.  Many collectors have commented that they receive a tranquil feeling from the piece.  It is like bringing the beauty of the outside world into their home.  Stone is very pleasing to the senses; when Tony looks at a rough piece of stone, he looks at color, texture, and shape.  Tony begins to form an idea in his mind, and then he rough-outs the shape, then smoothes and finishes the fine details.  His studio for stone sculpture is underneath a fifty-year old pine tree at his home.  Being versatile in his subjects and mediums allows him to touch more people.  Stone has heightened his creativity immensely.  Tony feels a part of nature and beauty as he creates each piece. Living in Utah allows him to be close to very good foundries and easy access to Utah and Colorado for his stone.
