Jami
Tobey is a Southern California painter who has
become well known for her impressionist and
intricate landscapes and tree paintings. Using
layers of acrylics, watercolor and ink, Jami’s
paintings have depth and color that have made them a
hit in the galleries she shows at throughout the
country.
As the
daughter of renowned Southwest Sculptor, Gene Tobey,
Jami grew up working along side her dad in his
studio. She cites her father as her best teacher,
and the motivator in continuing working, changing,
and growing as an artist.
Jami
grew up in an artistic household in Santa Fe, New
Mexico and always felt that art was a way of life.
Jami taught both elementary and middle school for
several years but continued to paint or draw until
late every night. She says that art is something
she simply needs to do. It’s both healing and
exciting. This was especially true when her oldest
child, Tobey, was diagnosed with Autism at age 2 ½
because it became more and more of a creative outlet
for both Jami and her kids. She continues to be
prolific, saying, “energy begets more energy, and
the more I paint the more that I want to paint”.
Jami is
inspired by the natural landscapes of the places she
travels and brings a sketch book and camera
everywhere she goes. Her other interests
include reading, music, and spending time with her
family and friends. Jami is
one of the feature writers at Valley Living Magazine
and takes great delight in writing her monthly
column, The Busy Woman. Jami is married with two
children; a son age seven and a daughter age 6.
Jami Tobey is a Graduate of Western State College of
Colorado with degrees in Fine Art and English. Her
specialty is Landscapes in Acrylics with sizes
ranging from 4” x 6” to 6ft x 8ft. She exhibits
nationally in several galleries and has been the
featured artist in numerous one woman shows. She
was Southwest Art Magazine’s Artist to Watch in
2006.
