Adam Rote

Adam Philip Rote has established himself as an artist to watch. His inspirations have earned a loyal following of artists in their own right. Patricia Neal, Grace Jones, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell and William Wyland, are collectors of Adam's work.

Adam arrived in Key West, Florida in 1989, opening his first gallery on wild and colorful Duval Street. A self-taught artist, he was drawn to the human figure and how to depict it even as the parade of humanity provided both models and customers. Realism was important in his early portrait work and over the years his appreciation of masters like Vargas and Petty served to soften and guide the expressions of life he sought to put on canvas.

Each series of paintings involves a different theme but threading through each of these we see the artist's obvious love of all life and great sorrow at its mortality.

Each theme is presented with a raw, physical beauty and sometimes abstract setting. The imagery draws you in until, without warning, you find yourself experiencing the emotions that led the artist to that particular effort. You will not be the first to stand in front of that canvas with tears in your eyes.

The plight of the tiger in our world today influenced an extended series that conveys Adam's thoughts: "What does it say about the human race if we can not save the tiger?" This series, unlike most other artists, does not attempt a picture postcard approach of large cats in their natural habitat. "I sought a human interaction, a connection that would awaken an understanding of man's role as protector of the creatures with whom we share this planet."

A painting can take several months to develop. First studying the subjects, Adam takes several photographs and spends countless hours in pre-production sketches. Only then does he begin the transfer of the final layout. A canvas is primed and sanded to give a very smooth finish. There the subjects are brought forth in a slow transparent build of acrylics, inks, and watercolors. The human figure is brought up in black and white tones giving a presence that does not compete with the animals’ magnificent color.

Here can be seen Adam's trademark style. Oils are sometimes dispersed in the background, as are pastels. When finished, the piece is left in plain view for a few weeks of casual observation and possible critique. If
satisfactory it is then sealed with a matte finish.

In development for the past year, the first in a ghost and gothic series has been released. A new concept, a short story will accompany this line.
